Portland professor resigns, saying university turned into 'social justice factory'

After claiming that the campus had become a "social justice factory" that rendered "intellectual exploration impossible," a professor at Portland State University decided to resign.
Peter Boghossian is a philosophy professor who has criticised what he called a "cultureof offense." He resigned Wednesday with an open letter to the university. He criticizes the school for being a place where "administrators abdicated their university's truth-seeking missions."

Boghossian wrote to Susan Jeffords, "I never believed and do not believe that instruction is to lead my students towards a particular conclusion." "I sought to provide the conditions for rigorous thought, to help them find the tools to hunt down and furrow their own conclusions.

"This is why I became teacher, and why I love to teach. The letter stated that brick by brick, the university had made intellectual exploration impossible. It has turned a bastion for free inquiry into a Social Justice factory, whose only inputs were race and gender and victimhood, and whose only outputs were division and grievance."

He said that students are being taught to be more open-minded.

"Students at Portland State do not learn to think. Boghossian stated that students are being taught to imitate the moral certainty of ideologues, rather than learning how to think. Boghossian wrote that administrators and faculty have abandoned the university's truth-seeking mission to drive intolerance for differing beliefs and opinions. This has led to a culture where students are afraid to express themselves openly and honestly.

The school released a statement to Washington Examiner stating that Portland State is a "welcoming home for free speech, academic freedom" and would continue to do so. "These practices do not conflict with our core institutional values, which are student success; racial equity and equity; and active engagement with the community.
