Olympic champion Alexander Zverev advanced to the US Open semi-finals after he beat South African Lloyd Harris in straight sets.
Zverev, a German fourth seed, won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 6-4 in just under two hours.
Zverev was trailing 5-3 in the first set but was able to hold his ground in the second, despite two early breaks giving him a commanding lead.
If Matteo Berrettini defeats the Serb, he could meet world number one Novak Djokovic at the semi-finals.
Zverev defeated Djokovic at the Olympic semi-finals in August. He is now aiming to reach back to back US Open finals after finishing second to Dominic Thiem, Austria, in 2020.
After last year's coronavirus pandemic, spectators were banned from Arthur Ashe Stadium, he was happy to make it to the finals.
Zverev stated, "Last year, I won it [the semifinal] before exactly six people." "So it's nice having everybody back."
South African Harris, 24, has completed an impressive tournament. He reached the third round in a Grand Slam in Australia for the first time this year, and backed it up in New York.
Harris was 5-3 ahead in the first set. He had also set point in tie-break, but couldn't deal with Zverev’s powerful serve over long periods.
Frustrations can get complicated
After a drink, Lloyd Harris and Alexander Zverev both took towels to the court and cleaned it.
It was a remarkable scene on Arthur Ashe, when Harris vented his frustrations after the first set tie-break by launching a bottle of water across the court.
The contents of the bag were spilt, and both players and the umpire, as well as a few ball kids, had to take towels and clean it up.
Harris and Zverev were talking at one point while Harris dried up the mess. Then, Harris and Zverev poured water on the area to prevent it from sticking.
Zverev was not the only one who lost his cool. Zverev was trailing 5-3 in set 1, and he slammed the racquet into ground after missing a forehand.
Harris couldn't find a way to get back in the match, despite the German serving well.
