Manchester City will be facing the possibility of selecting Scott Carson as their third-choice goalkeeper for Saturday's Premier League match against Leicester City. 1 Zack Steffen is recovering from COVID-19.

Sources tell ESPN that eight Premier League players may miss this weekend's fixtures because the Brazilian FA invoked a FIFA rule that prohibits players from playing for their clubs if they have not been released on international duty.

If it meant that players had to travel to countries on the red list, then the Premier League prohibited them from joining their national teams.

City would be without Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson. With Steffen absent after being tested positive for COVID-19 during international duty, Carson, 36, could start against Leicester City at King Power Stadium.

Since moving from Derby County to the Etihad Stadium in 2019, the former England goalkeeper has only made one senior appearance. He was initially on loan.

ESPN has been told by sources that the Premier League is in talks with FIFA and Brazilian authorities to try to resolve the situation. There is still hope Ederson can play.

Players from Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are also affected.

FIFA regulations allow players to be expelled for up to five days after an international break. It is possible for Fred, a United midfielder, to be reversed. Thiago Silva, a Chelsea defender would also be absent from Tuesday's Champions League matches.

Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, and Alisson from Liverpool were included. Raphinha, a Leeds forward, was also called up to the Brazil squad.

Richarlison from Everton has been left out of the list because Everton permitted Richarlison to participate at the Olympic Games, even though regulations didn't require it.

City is hopeful that Kevin De Bruyne will be available for Leicester's trip after the Belgium midfielder has returned to training after an ankle injury.

Phil Foden also resumed training after sustaining a foot injury in Euro 2020.

The Etihad is close to signing a long-term contract for the 21-year old. However, he will be evaluated before making a decision about whether he can face Leicester.
