House Ethics panel announces new investigations of four lawmakers

Tuesday's announcement by the House Ethics Committee was that it will investigate four legislators for possible violations of ethics cited outside.
These are Tom Malinowski (a New Jersey Democrat); Alex Mooney (a West Virginia Republican); Rep. Jim Hagedorn (a Minnesota Republican); and Rep. Mike Kelly (a Pennsylvania Republican). Each subject is being investigated for their separate issues.

After receiving referrals from the Office of Congressional Ethics (an independent agency that can investigate legislators based on complaints outside), the bipartisan ethics panel of 10 members announced it would investigate these lawmakers.

Malinowski is being investigated for insider stock trading. He has denied this.

The committee is investigating allegations that Mooney used thousands of dollars from campaign funds for personal expenses, and whether Hagedorn misappropriated campaign funding.

Kelly was criticised for a stock purchase he made with his wife in 2020. Critics claim Kelly benefited from the role of the lawmaker in calling an inquiry into foreign steel companies.

These investigations were initiated by the Office of Congressional Ethics outside, which made recommendations to the House ethics committee on July 23 regarding all four legislators.
