Apple's secretive self driving car project has received its next blow, making it even more troubled.

Bloomberg reports that Doug Field, the project leader, is now joining Ford as chief embedded technology and advanced technology officer.

Field is a rsum-packed man. Field was also instrumental in the launch of Tesla's blockbuster sedan, Model 3.

Doug is a world-renowned engineering and product design leader and has been instrumental in the development of breakthrough products across auto and tech, as well as mobility at Apple, Tesla, and Segway," Jim Farley, Ford CEO, stated in a statement.

Field will be responsible for the development of Blue Oval Intelligence software, which delivers software to the smart cars of US carmakers.

Field stated that Field was thrilled to join Ford during the transition to a new, complicated and exciting period in the automotive industry. It will be an honor to work with Ford to deliver new experiences that are based on the shift towards electrification, digital experiences and software.

Big Blow

It's a big day for Ford but not for Apple. In June, several key managers resigned from the team that was being managed by Field and hampered the tech giants' efforts to build a car.

In response to the news, Apple reporter Mark Gurman tweeted that this is the most significant setback in Apple's history of setbacks. As I stated in January, the Apple Car is not due to launch anytime soon. Not 2024.

It might be too late for the entire project. Gurman said that it might be too late for the project as a whole.
