World Cup: Penalty given after five seconds sparks Tanzania win

Last update on. From the section Sport Africa
Simon Msuva from Tanzania, the striker, won the penalty. He plays club football in Morocco at Wydad AC

One of the most important penalties in football history was earned by Tanzania when Simon Msuva was fouled against Madagascar after only four seconds. The resulting spot-kick was converted to give them a 3-2 victory.

Msuva snatched on a hopeful punt forward, after Tanzania kicked off. However, Msuva was pushed to the box's edge by Melvin Adrien, Madagascar goalkeeper.

Five seconds remained on the clock and the referee pointed out the spot external-link. Erasto Edward Nyoni converted a minute later to give his team an early lead.

Although this is not yet confirmed, Tanzania's penalty may be the fastest ever handed out.

In 2014, Montenegro was penalized after only 10 seconds of an international friendly against Ghana. There have been also sub-10 second penalty awards for club football external link.

Novatus Miroshi gave hosts a lead of twice before half-hour, but Madagascar pulled through to make it 2-2 at the end thanks to Thomas Fontaine and Njiva Rakotomarimalala.

Feisal Salum Abdallah, who scored four points to make Tanzania the top of Group J, surpassed Benin by goal difference, shortly after the break.

Day of Penalties

Wahbi Khazri, Tunisia's captain, plays for French club St Etienne

When Tunisia won 2-0 in Zambia, they became the first team that scored at least six points.

Wabhi Khazri, Carthage Eagles' skipper, scored from the spot after nine minutes. Anis Ben Slimane then doubled the lead during stoppage time.

Equatorial Guinea defeated Mauritania 1-0 in the other Group B game, as captain Iban Salvador converted a penalty at the hour mark.

These results show that Tunisia is three points ahead of Equatorial Guinea and Zambia, while Mauritania is still pointless after only two games.

Senegal won two more victories when they defeated hosts Congo Brazzaville, 3-1 in Group H.

After 26 minutes, Boulaye Dia took the lead for the visitors. However, Congo equalised at the half-time break as Silvere Ganvoula defeated Edouard Mendy, Chelsea's goalkeeper with a fiercely-struck penalty.

Sadio Mane, Liverpool's Liverpool player, has scored in both Senegal's 2022 World Cup qualifiers thus far

Senegal took the lead again through Watford's Ismaila Sarr, but Congo keeper Christoffer Maumbi fell to Sadio Mane just moments later. The Liverpool forward can now score from the 12-yard line.

Two rounds of qualifying have concluded with Senegal having six points, Namibia has four and Congo one. Togo is seeking their first.

Elsewhere, a changed Nigeria side - captain Ahmed Musa was celebrating his 100th cap – needed two pieces of poor defense from Cape Verde to come back from behind to win Group C 2-1.

After 19 minutes, the Blue Sharks led through Dylan Tavares, a Swiss-born player. Napoli's Victor Osimhen was there to convert the ball into his goal. Vozinha had done well to stop a Kelvin Pires own goal.

Nigeria was able to benefit again from Cape Verde's poor defense in the 75th minute when Kenny Rocha scored an amazing own goal by accidentally kicking Vozinha 35 yards away.

Nigeria has the maximum points after two matches. Liberia has three and Nigeria has Nigeria's maximum points. Cape Verde, CAR, and CAR each have one point.

After beating Mozambique, 1-0, Malawi was just one point behind Ivory Coast in Group D.

Richard Mbulu took advantage of a disastrous 30-yard back-pass nine minutes later, which gave him an open goal. The ball had rebounded off the post.

Cameroon and Malawi now have three points each in one of the most difficult groups for African World Cup qualifying, while Mozambique and the Ivorians are on four.

With a penalty in the 94th minute from Aschalew Tamene, Ethiopia won their first victory in Group G.

This win gives the Ethiopians three points. They are one point behind South Africa, who beat Ghana 1-0 in Johannesburg Monday.

The Black Stars have also three points, which is two more than the Zimbabwe bottom side.

Only the winners from Africa's ten qualifying categories will qualify for the playoffs next March. Next year, the five finalists on the continent for the World Cup will be announced.
