Apple may soon release a new version its iPhone MagSafe charging puck. A new FCC listing (A2548) for a Magnetic Charger was first seen by Dave Zatz, a blogger. It shows an accessory that has a new model number (A2548), but is otherwise identical to Apple's current charger (A2140). The charger was tested on a range of devices, including four marked "New Phone" which nearly corresponds to Apple's expected iPhone 13 models.
The official FCC documents don't give too much information about the new features. 9to5Mac reports that it has been tested with all four iPhone 12 models (marked Legacy Phone), as well as four unannounced phones. This suggests that the new MagSafe charger should work with both of these generations. The diagram also shows how the puck is used to charge two AirPods. This is something that the MagSafe charger can technically do. However, it won't attach magnetically to the AirPods case as it does with the new iPhones.
Yes, as seen in photos. Im wondering if new AirPod case gets magnets. pic.twitter.com/kXBeeoSHRE Dave Zatz (@davezatz) September 6, 2021
What's the latest? There have been rumors that the iPhones of this year could have stronger magnets in their backs. This could make them more attractive to MagSafe chargers. A larger wireless charging coil has been mentioned, with speculation that it could be capable of charging faster and at higher wattages. This would require an updated charging puck.
Or, maybe it's a minor update that is functionally identical to the current iPhones on the market. 9to5Mac points out that Apple has done this in the past. We won't have to wait long to find out as Apple is widely believed to be announcing its new iPhones next week.
