Tributes pour in for 'The Wire' star Michael K. Williams

Michael K. Williams, an actor best known for his iconic portrayal of Omar Little on The Wire, was reported dead at 54. His former co-stars, as well as his friends on social media, have paid a variety of tributes in the hours that followed.
Williams had a significant impact on TV and film throughout his career. He was the star of Boardwalk Empire's Chalky White, and he later appeared in Lovecraft Country as Lovecraft Country. This latter series earned him an Emmy nomination.

It is evident from the stories and messages shared that he had an impact on more than his acting career.

Lance Reddick, the actor who played Cedric Dan Daniels in The Wire posted a video where he talked about Williams' ability to be kind.

Reddick stated, "While everyone else is talking about how great he was as an actor, I just want you to know that he was one the kindest and gentlest, most genuine and courageous souls I have ever met." Rest in peace, my brother.

David Simon, creator of The Wire was at a loss of words.

Wendell Pierce shared a thread where he described Williams, a police detective William "Bunk", Moreland, as an "immensely gifted man."

Other stars of The Wire also posted tributes, including Tray Chaney and Isiah Whitlock Jr (Clay Davis), Domenick Lombardozzi and Thomas "Herc" Hauk (Poot Car).

Williams' Lovecraft Country stars Aunjanue Eli and Courtney B. Vance (who play Hippolyta Freeman, George Freeman) shared their own tributes.

The tributes continue to come in from all corners of the entertainment industry, including many of his co stars like Riz Ahmed of The Night Of, Stephen Graham of Boardwalk Empire, Ghostbusters' Leslie Jones and Joel McHale of Community, as well as Brooklyn's Finest costar Ellen Barkin. Spike Lee, director of The Night Of, posted a tribute on Instagram to his friend.
