Maria Sakkari reaches first US Open quarterfinal after marathon 3-setter vs. Bianca Andreescu that ended at 2:13 a.m.

Maria Sakkari defeated 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu to reach the US Open quarterfinals.
Sakkari won 6-7 (2), 7-6(6), and 6-3 on Tuesday. Andreescu was having trouble with her left leg so a trainer taped it during a medical timeout. Andreescu was unable to walk between the points and her leg buckled several times.

The match ended at 2:13 a.m. local. Madison Keys defeated Alison Riske in the 2016 first round. The previous women's record was 1:48 a.m.

"I hope that you won't be late for work [today Sakkari said to those who stayed till the end. "Go to sleep, and I'll be back in two days."

The end saw both players' grunts echo off the thousands of blue seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fans engaged in dueling first name chants: Ma-ria! Fans who remained engaged in dueling first-name chants: "Ma-ri-a!" and "Bian-ca!"

Andreescu was a novice in Flushing Meadows' main draw. In the final, she beat Serena Williams to win the title in her debut. She also missed the hard-court Grand Slam tournament 2020 because of an injury in her knee.

Later, Andreescu stated that she was not certain what the exact injury was.

She said that she didn't know much at this point, but that she had slid a few times and fell on her groin a bit after the match. I hope it's not too serious, but it affected me a bit.

In the quarterfinals, Sakkari, 17th seed, will play Karolina Pliskova (two-time Grand Slam runner up). Fourth-seeded Pliskova won Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 and 6-4 on Monday.

Belinda Bencic also secured a place in the quarterfinals. To reach the final eight of the tournament, the Olympic gold medalist from Switzerland defeated Iga Swiatek 7-6 (12), and 6-3.

The tiebreaker was over for a long time, and Bencic, who was 11th in the rankings, won the second set in 43 mins. This is about 20 minutes more than the tiebreaker.

Bencic stated that the set was even and that he believes in tiebreaks it's always a bit luck.

In 2019, Bencic reached the semifinals at the US Open. In 2014, she reached the quarterfinals for her debut.

Swiatek is the No. Swiatek, the No. 7 seed from Poland, won the French Open last year and was the only woman to reach the fourth round of any major.

American Shelby Rogers' unexpected run is over. Rogers was defeated by Ash Barty, the top-ranked American teen, on Saturday. He lost to Emma Raducanu, a British teen, 6-2, 6-1.

Raducanu, 18 years old, has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open qualifying rounds. In the women's final 8, she will be joining Leylah Fernandez, a fellow teenager.

Raducanu reached the fourth round of Wimbledon. She also made it to the last Grand Slam tournament.

Rogers led by 2-0 before Raducanu won the 11 remaining games.

Raducanu will face Bencic next with a spot on the semifinals.

Raducanu stated, "Belinda's a great player and she's in great shape so I know that I'm going have to bring it to Wednesday."
