Rogers was unable to reach the quarter-finals, as he lost to Emma Raducanu, a British teenager

American Shelby Rogers stated that she was expecting death threats from social media after her fourth round defeat by Emma Raducanu at the US Open.

The world's 43rd-ranked 28-year old was defeated 6-2-6-1 by Britain's Raducanu.

"I'm going have nine million death threats, and whatnot." Rogers stated that at this stage in my career, Rogers is used to it.

"I wish social media didn’t exist"

Sloane Stephens, Rogers' compatriot, also spoke out about the online abuse that she suffered following her loss to Angelique Kerber in the third round 5-7 6-2 3-3.

Stephens claimed she received over 2,000 abusive messages, including racist, sexist, and homophobic comments. She posted the examples in an Instagram story.

Rogers said that she could look through her profile right now and see that I am probably a "fat pig" and can probably use words I don't know right now. She defeated Ashleigh Barty, the world number one, in round three.

"It's very unfortunate, and it can sometimes get to your head."

Women's Tennis Association (WTA), says it is looking into the problem of professional athletes being abused online by a company called Theseus, which provides risk assessment and management services.

The WTA stated that "Theseus, the WTA, and the WTA work together with the social media platform to shut down accounts whenever warranted and, if applicable, local authorities were notified."
