Shelby Rogers speaks out on social media harassment, says she anticipates death threats after US Open loss

Shelby Rogers claims she will have to deal "nine million death threats," according to her social media accounts, after losing to Emma Raducanu in Round 16 at the US Open.
NEW YORK -- Shelby Rogers, who suffered a disappointing defeat in the US Open to Emma Raducanu of Great Britain in straight sets, said that she will now have to deal "nine million death threats" via her social media accounts. These are from people who are upset by her loss.

She spoke about the attention she's been in since her win over world No. Rogers stated that she wishes "social media didn’t exist" when discussing Ashleigh Barty's win against world No. 1.

She said that while we all appreciate those spotlight moments, she added that today was a very difficult day and that I would be receiving nine million death threats. It's very polarizing. One extreme is very quickly.

Rogers stated that, while she doesn’t like social media she believes it’s an important part of marketing and must post certain things.

Rogers stated, "You could probably look through my profile right right now -- it's likely that I'm a fat pig and words I can't use right now," It is what it IS. It's a sad side to any sport, so you try to not take it too seriously.

Although she said that she didn't want comments about her from others posting from their basements, it can sometimes get to her head.

"Social media cannot control my actions and how my training will go, but it is something I wish didn't exist." It's very difficult."

Sloane Stephens, a former US Open champion, also spoke out about her experience with harassing and abusive messages on Instagram following her third round loss to Angelique Kerber. She called it "exhausting" and "never-ending."
