Fourth LV= Insurance test, Kia Oval (day five out of five) India 191(Woakes 4-55) and 466 (Rohit 127) England 289 (Pope 81), 210 (Hameed 3-60, Umesh 3-60). India won by 157 runs Scorecard
England's batting collapsed in the face Indian, who won the fourth Test by just 157 runs to win the series.
England lost for 210 at the Kia Oval on a pitch that was largely uncharacteristic.
Haseeb Hameed scored 63 runs before becoming the first wicket to be taken for six runs.
Jasprit Bhumrah, India's pace bowler, was phenomenal. He reverse-swung the ball at 90mph. He produced a delivery that was almost unplayable to bowl Jonny Bairstow.
Bumrah finished with 2-27. Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, and Umesh Yodav took two wickets each.
To win the series in the UK, India must avoid defeat in Friday's final Test at Emirates Old Trafford. This will be the first series since 2007.
Close to a series win for Ruthless India
India's predatory performance on the final day was shocking. They won despite being 127-7 in the first innings and a deficit of 99 in the second. On Sunday, they were 213 ahead with four wickets remaining.
England spoke of the possibility that they would be able to pull off the highest-scoring chase in Test cricket overnight. However, even with such a great batting pitch, a draw would have been a respectable result.
England was overwhelmed when the tourists felt victory and Captain Virat Kohli conducted the exhilarating India support in front of a sell-out crowd.
Joe Root's team lost the toss after choosing to field first. Six catches were dropped by them in the match. Dawid Malan's unnecessary run-out on Monday was yet another example of hosts complicity in their own downfall.
This is not to diminish India's dominance in the series, despite omitting Ravichandran Ashwin, masterful off-spinner, throughout.
This was where Thakur produced two valuable runs starting at number eight. Rohit Sharma was brilliant in his first overseas Test hundred. India, tactically, were able to exploit the reverse-swing on day final.
India is on the verge to win a second historic away series victory this year, after a stunning win in Australia in January.
India's Brilliant Bumrah Sparkles
England was only one session away from relative safety, at 131-2 at lunch. They lost six wickets and scored 62 runs.
Hameed was already dropped for a terrible sweep. Malan was called for the single that led to the run-out. He then played down the wrong line and was bowled by Jadeja.
Bumrah then unleashed his exhilarating spell. He reversed the old ball quickly, first getting through Ollie Pope’s defensive push and then followed it up with an inswinging yorker which gave Bairstow no chance.
Bumrah took the Pope wicket in his 100th Test match. He was the fastest Indian seamer to achieve this milestone. He bowled his 2-6 in six runs, which was on average the fastest time he's ever bowled in this series.
Moeen Ali calmly poked Jadeja in the short leg. India had seized control of the situation and were leading a charge for victory.
Root cannot save you
England continued its peaceful progress since the fourth night, with Rory Burns at 50 and Hameed 100 taking his first stand. Thakur was able to deliver a fine delivery on Monday.
Malan was uncertain, but it is possible that he wasn't to blame for his death. Hameed asked for a questionable single off the off side. Sub fielder Mayank Agarwal was able to swing and return the ball to Rishabh Pant, before Malan could slip into his place.
Root was then announced. Root was born. He is a captain who often carries England's hopes through his urgency at the crease. However, he saw the middle-order collapse of the non-striker and had to undergo a desperate rescue operation.
After eating nearly 13 runs with Chris Woakes, he fiddled at Thakur's first spell. He then chopped on to his stumps for 36, effectively ending England’s slim hopes.
Woakes snatched Umesh to midwicket at the stroke of tea. Overton was painlessly bowled off his elbow as Umesh took the second ball. James Anderson was the last man left.
"The spell of summer" - What they said
Joe Root, England captain, on BBC Test Match Special: It's frustrating. We felt like we had a chance of winning the Test match when we arrived this morning.
"We created a platform for the team to win the game. It was an amazing spell of bowling that broke it open for India.
"We have to see the entire game. Our catching must improve. We'll do dome learning. It's not necessary to dwell on it for too long.
Michael Vaughan, former England captain: "In the second wicket when England were under tremendous pressure, they came up short. They've not been able handle the pressure of the bat for long.
"Today's performance in bowling was the best we have seen in a long, long while. It was of high quality.
"Jasprit Bumrah's spell following lunch was the spell that lasted the entire summer by an absolute country mile."
Former England spinner Phil Tufnell said that India raised their game when it mattered and England couldn’t do anything to stop it. The afternoon session was a complete success.
