Officials stop play during Brazil v Argentina

Fifa said it regretted the scenes that led to Brazil's and Argentina's World Cup qualifier being suspended. This prevented "millions of people" from enjoying the game.

After Brazilian health officials opposed the participation of three Argentine athletes, Sunday's match was abandoned shortly after kick-off.

Fifa stated that it had received first reports from match officials. These will be reviewed by the "competent disciplinary bodies".

There is no date yet for the rearranged fixture.

"Fifa regrets that the Conmebol qualifiers for the Fifa World Cup 2022 were suspended. This prevented millions of football fans from watching a match between Argentina and Brazil," the governing body of world football said in a statement.

Fifa has received the first official match reports. These reports will be analyzed by competent disciplinary bodies, and a decision taken in due time."

Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa, addressed the European Club Association's General Assembly via video. He urged Europe to be flexible in its thinking to help South America overcome its qualification backlog.

This is after the UK Government refused to grant Infantino's request for quarantine exemptions for footballers in order to fulfill their international obligations.

"We are in a very difficult place in the UK. He said that players must return to their country to play.

"In March, South American players stayed with clubs. Now they must play qualifiers for their national team. This is why I called on solidarity.

"We must give hope to countries that only see their top players when they play for national teams. The World Cup must be protected. "September was not ideal. Let's find the right compromise to protect October, November, and next year."

After just five minutes, the Brazil-Argentina match was abandoned

What has happened?

After five minutes, Sunday's match at Sao Paulo Corinthians Arena's Corinthians Arena was abandoned by Brazilian health officials.

This dramatic intervention was made hours after Brazil's health officials had ordered that four England-based players from Argentina be quarantined.

Brazilian regulations require that visitors who arrived in the UK within the last 14 days must be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

It did not name the four players, but Emiliano Buendia of Aston Villa and Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa were the English Premier League club's players, as well as Giovani lo Celso of Tottenham Hotspur and Cristian Romero. The game was started by Romero, Lo Celso, and Martinez.

Anvisa, a Brazilian health agency, said that the four players had provided "false data" and failed to adhere to local laws.

After realizing false information was provided on Friday, the company held a meeting on Saturday with the "institutions concerned" to inform them about the need for quarantine.

The players continued to train on Saturday night, despite this. Anvisa sought the assistance of the federal police on Sunday to enforce quarantine. However, their efforts were "frustrated".

The Argentine Football Association stated that the team was in Brazil since September 3rd and had complied all health protocols. However, Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, criticized the timing of the intervention by health officials.

Conmebol, South American football's governing body, issued a statement about the match around an hour after it was stopped.
