South Carolina lawyer shot three months after wife, son gunned down

Alex Murdaugh, a South Carolina lawyer, was hurt in a roadside shooting on Saturday. This happened nearly 12 weeks after his son and wife were killed by gunfire, authorities stated.
Tommy Crosby, spokesperson for South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed that Murdaugh was shot in Hampton County.

He said via email that "SLED agents were actively investigating the incident."

The shooting was first reported by the Island Packet.

Murdaugh was driving his car with a flat tire and pulled it over when a pickup truck came by. Jim Griffin, a family friend and lawyer, said Murdaugh approached them. Someone inside then opened fire.

Griffin claimed that he spoke to Alex's brother, Randy, who is a South Carolina attorney who works at the family-affiliated firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick. He claimed that Alex had been able to call Randy and that he could continue to use his phone from Charleston's hospital bed.

After Paul, 22 years old, and Margaret, 52 years old, were found dead on June 7, near their mother's dog kennels in Colleton County, the shooting took place. They were shot to death.

The case was classified by state investigators as a double murder.

The Murdaugh family has been practicing law in South Carolina for more than 100 years. They have also served as top prosecutors in a group of counties known as the Lowcountry.

Griffin stated that the most recent shooting was "very troubling."

He said, "It makes it wonder what's going on."
