USMNT's Zack Steffen tests positive for COVID, won't go to Honduras

El Salvador defeated the United States in their first match of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. (1:31).
Zack Steffen, the goalkeeper for the United States men's national soccer team, has been tested positive for COVID-19. He will not travel to Honduras to play in their World Cup qualifying match in San Pedro Sula on Wednesday.

After violating USMNT's COVID protocols, Weston McKennie, a USMNT midfielder, will be absent from Sunday's match against Canada at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. Giovanni Reyna, a USMNT midfielder, will be absent from the Canada and Honudras matches due to a hamstring injury.

Steffen was already out of Canada's match due to back spasms. This had prevented the Manchester City man, Steffen, from making it to El Salvador last week's draw.

A spokesperson for the USMNT stated that Steffen's positive test occurred after the team traveled to El Salvador. Another member of the U.S. delegation also tested positive.

New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson has replaced Steffen on the U.S. roster.

Steffen is the second American star to be recently positive for COVID-19. Christian Pulisic, a U.S. star, also tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug. 18. He was forced to quarantine for 10 more days at Chelsea before he traveled to the U.S. for the qualifying games.
