Mercedes-Benz recently announced that it would go all-electric by 2030. This naturally got race fans excited about electric high-performance cars from the AMG sub-brand. We got our first glimpse at the AMG EQS today, a sport sedan that can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. It has a top speed exceedingly fast of 155 mph. The 2021 IAA Mobility in Germany was the first time it was made public.
The AMGEQS is the first electric production car made by the in-house performance subsidiary of automaker Mercedes. Mercedes must ensure that everything goes smoothly if it is to please its loyal customers and attract new customers away from Tesla.
First battery-electric production vehicle from the in-house performance subsidiary of automaker
Mercedes claims that this is a driving machine for car enthusiasts. Its smooth lines and aerodynamic profile make it easy to see why. It is unclear how car enthusiasts will respond to the totally silent electric motors. Mercedes attempts to make the V8 sound more humane by creating an emotive vehicle sound.
The EQS, an all-electric version the automaker's storied S class sedan, was released this year to great reviews. We were impressed by its powerful battery, large range of driving modes and high-end in-car technology. Mercedes must offer the AMG version EQS if it is to compete with BMW, Tesla, and BMW in the luxury segment.
The spec sheet is full of surprises. The sedan's twin motors produce 649 horsepower and a maximum torque output of 700 ft.lbs. Race Start mode with boost function can increase the horsepower to 751 and the torque to 752 feet-lbs.
The 400-volt battery's usable energy content is 107.8kWh. This is greater than any Tesla vehicle. Mercedes claims it has reduced cobalt in the battery's chemistry to 10%. Cobalt is one of the most costly materials used in batteries. Therefore, EVs will be less expensive than those that use gas. Because it was mined in a way that endangered child workers and destroyed the environment in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has been called "the blood diamond of batteries".
Mercedes claims that the battery management system has been specifically designed for AMG. The Sport and Sport+ driving modes are focused on performance while Comfort mode is concerned with operating range. We know a lot about the EQS driving modes, and the use regenerative braking. This is sure to make you feel at home in the driver's seat.
Mercedes is excited to share the AMGs unique sound profiles because it is so high up in the press release. It is under the subhed: AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE. Emotional sound spectrum for a unique driving experiences.
Mercedes claims it used subwoofers, loudspeakers and a sound generator in order to create an authentic sound experience. The sound is included in a video, which I am fine with. Although it doesn't make the engine growl, it does not sound artificial. Although I was not a fan of the Volkswagen ID 4's fake sound, this one doesn't seem to offend too many people.
The AMG EQS is built using one of three custom EV architectures that Mercedes has created for its new range of electric cars. The company stated that the AMG.EA architecture will be used to build this car and future AMG electric models.

The Mercedes Hyperscreen is a trio of screens that are embedded in one piece of glass which extends from pillar to pillar. It works with the MBUX automaker system but also has something exclusive to AMG.
AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual race engineer is also an option. The software is part the MBUX infotainment systems and records more than 80 vehicle-specific information (i.e. Speed, acceleration, etc. are all recorded while driving on a racetrack. A lap and sector time are also displayed along with the difference between them and a reference time. Specific elements of the display are displayed in red or green so that the driver can see, at a glance, whether they are faster or slower than the best.
It's like a fitness app for tracking your workout performance but for your car. This app is sure to appeal to racers.
Unfortunately, we don't have a production date nor a suggested retail price. The 2021 EQS is well over $100,000 so don't expect it to retail for less than $120,000. Mercedes must be able to get the car to customers before the launch of the next-generation Tesla Roadster in 2023, which was delayed to 2023. The AMG EQS is a strong contender to win the race.
