World Cup 2022: How far are Scotland from qualifying for Qatar?

Last update on.
Billy Gilmour was not one of the players that contributed to Scotland's win against Moldova.

After a bitter night in Copenhagen, the pain of defeat was transformed into nervous tension when Hampden won against Moldova.

Lyndon Dykes brought Scotland back to winning ways Saturday, but it wasn't an easy task for the 40,000 people who packed the stadium.

Although a single goal was enough, there were some other impressive results. How do Scotland's prospects of reaching the World Cup in Qatar next summer?

Second shooting?

Although Denmark's defeat was painful, Kasper Hjulmand's team looked like they were going to disappear in the distance. They would have won Group F first and automatically qualified for the final.

Despite the Faroes' valiant effort on Saturday, the Danes managed a narrow victory to maintain their dominance of Group F.

The battle for second place between Scotland and Austria and Israel is where Steve Clarke's side would be entering the play-offs. They were not helped by draws against either of these sides in March.

Dykes' goal gave Scotland victory, but the World Cup bid was also helped by Israel's surprising win at home to second-seeds Austria with 5-2.

This means that at the halfway point, Scots are in third place, one point above Austrians, and two ahead of Israel.

What are the upcoming games like?

Austria was also represented at the Euros this year, and they went one better than Scotland in the group phase. The Netherlands were defeated by Ukraine and North Macedonia, but the Austrians beat eventual champions Italy in the last 16. They lost 2-1 in extra time.

Their March 4-0 defeat by Denmark at home, combined with Saturday's crushing of Israel on Saturday, shows that they are still vulnerable.

If you're a cup-half empty type of person, it could be said that it just increases their desire for a big performance on Tuesday.

Going into this weekend, the narrative was that Scotland needed two wins. However, Israel is travelling to Denmark, the runaway leader, so a draw for Clarke may be enough to keep the Qatar playoff dream alive.

What is the process of play-offs?

After the Czech Republic beat Scotland's group, the Nations League route to the playoffs, which was used to send Clarke's team to Euro 2020, has been closed.

Only a second-placed finish is acceptable. The World Cup qualifiers' 10 runners-up progress to the play-offs. Here, the six best seeded players are determined based on their group stage results.

The line-up includes the section winners of Two Nations League who were third or lower in World Cup qualifying.

The 12 teams are divided into three play-off pathways for a one-off semi-final and a final next March. The showpiece will be held in Qatar by the three winners of each path.

It's simple, right?
