Novak Djokovic was forced to overcome Kei Nishikori to win the US Open fourth round. He is still trying to earn a calendar Grand Slam.

The world number one won 6-7 (4-7) 66-3 6-3 and 6-2 to overcome a loose opening set. He also beat the Japanese for 17th consecutive time.

The 34-year-old Serb is targeting a record 21st Grand Slam title for men.

After beating Aslan Karatsev, the wildcard, he will next face American Jenson Brooksby.

Brooksby, world number 99, won 6-2,3-6,2-6,6-3,6-3 to become the youngest American man to reach the fourth round of the US Open since Andy Roddick 2002.

The New York crowd has not been very supportive of top seed Djokovic, but they seemed to be receptive by the end.

He asked them several times to make more noise, cupping his ears toward the fans and not doing his traditional'show-of-love' celebration in front of the stands.

After his match interview, he spent some time signing autographs and giving out items for young fans.

Djokovic seemed out of sorts in the first set, but he battled back from an earlier break down to force a tie.

He struggled with his serve and Nishikori took advantage to win just his fourth set against Djokovic of 33 he had played.

Nishikori was determined to win, but he could only convert two of 13 break-point chances he created.

Djokovic took a 5-3 lead in set three, but the Serb immediately responded and cruised through a fourth to end the match.

Djokovic stated, "I don’t think I started off very strong but he surprised us with his level today."

"It took me some time to get used to his game."

Oscar Otte, a German qualifier, won against Andrea Seppi in the fourth round.

World number 114 Otte was match point down in the first two qualifying matches. He won 6-3,6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

He will be facing Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini who had to work hard in order to defeat Belarusian Ilya Ivashka.

Sixth seed from Italy, he won 69 matches.

Jannik Sinner, the 13th seed in Italy, defeated Gael Monfils in five set. He weathered a fightback by the Frenchman to win 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-4

Sinner will play either the fourth seed Alexander Zverev from Germany or Jack Sock in the quarter-finals.

South Africa's Lloyd Harris won 6-4,6-4,6-4 against Canada's Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov.

After the American beat Nikoloz Basilashvili, Georgia 7-6 (7-5 6-3 6-4), Reilly Opelka will be his next opponent.
