Yes, I know it sounds crazy but I decided to fly from Los Angeles directly to Frankfurt. Then I turned around to fly home. What's the point? All for a rubber duck at the Lufthansa First Class Terminal. It's a testimony to my loyalty to Lufthansa.
Crazy: Fly to Frankfurt for a Special Rubber Duck from Lufthansa
After being closed for over a year due to pandemic, the Lufthansa First Class Terminal was reopened recently. Lufthansa released a limited edition COVID-19 duck to celebrate.
Lufthansa provides rubber ducks to commemorate your First Class Terminal experience. They were once yellow, but they have become black recently. Lufthansa also offers special-edition ducks such as the one shown above. I am proud to have amassed a large collection of these rare ducks over the years.
The COVID-19 duck is a special part of my heart. It's about so much more than just the duck. My primary business was destroyed by COVID-19, and my life was forever changed. Travel restrictions and lockdowns also crippled Award Expert - my business that helped me earn miles and points. After contracting COVID-19, I lost my senses of smell for six weeks. We have seen the death of many people around the globe from the pandemic. There has also been unprecedented separation between family and friends, who have had to communicate with each other via screens. This is not a substitute for human interaction.
The virus is not yet eradicated, but signs of normalcy are beginning to emerge again. Borders have been reopened. Families have been reunited. The First Class Terminal is now open. It's one of my favourite places in the entire world.
The pandemic is not something I would like to forget. It is and will always be a part of my history. The Lufthansa COVID-19 duck is a great example of this history. The duck's message "Welcome home" is a great reminder of how it feels to return home. Travel is my home. It is my element.
My office will be home to the duck. It will serve as a reminder of the hard lessons I have learned in the past year, but also serve to remind me that the joy of traveling endures, and that Lufthansa First Class remains an aspirational, but possible, expression of my love of points and miles.
Although I know I could theoretically buy one of these ducks from eBay, where's the fun? My ducks have not been purchased.
Don't worry, I'm going to Frankfurt.
