Netherlands 4-0 Montenegro: Memphis Depay stars in important World Cup qualifying win

In the victory over Montenegro, Depay scored his 29th & 30th international goals

Memphis Depay scored twice to help the Netherlands win a crucial World Cup qualifying victory against Montenegro.

After being brought down in the box, Dusan Lagator had put him on the penalty spot.

After the break, he struck his second strike, launching from an angle just before Giorginio Wijnaldum scored the third.

Cody Gakpo scored the best goal of night to move the Dutch second in Group G. This was one point behind leaders Turkey who they will host on Tuesday.

Gakpo scored his first goal for his country on the same ground that he plays club football for PSV Eindhoven.

Depay now has thirty for his country, and nine in his nine last matches.

They combined Wijnaldum’s efforts to ensure a well-deserved victory - the first of Louis van Gaal’s third tenure in charge of his country.

Montenegro had their chances but it was largely due to sloppy defense from the home side. Stefan Mugosa, however, was particularly wasteful with a shot that he missed after being put in on goal by Tyrell Malacia, a Dutch debutant.

They are currently fourth in the group with seven points. They are also off the pace for the automatic spot. Tuesday's game at Amsterdam will determine who gets that.
