AR says, "He was truly a second dad. I am where I am today due to his generosity. Willard was the greatest broadcaster of all time, a man who lived up to his age. There will never be another Willard like him."
Willard began his career at TODAY in 1980 and quickly became well-known for his jovial anchoring, whether it was during a weather segment or any other special event he hosted for NBC. He was a hilarious host, who would dress up in outrageous costumes and joke around on air (and during MOTS interviews).
Perhaps his most memorable moment is when he wished Americans a happy 100th birthday in an ongoing Smucker’s segment. He featured different centennials who reached the milestone. Willard hosted many of America's most memorable celebration moments, including presidential inaugurations, holiday parades, parties and expos.
He was the Al Roker of his time, and did pass the baton to Al when he retired as anchor in the late '90s. They remained close friends, and Al considers him his mentor.
BTW, Willard had a long history of clowning around. In TV commercials during the 1960s, he played Ronald McDonald's first appearance. He also had a chance to play Bozo the Clown. From start to finish, Dude was a joy-spreader all around.
His wife Paris Keena and his children have survived him. Willard was 87.
