Sloane Stephens calls harassing messages after US Open loss 'exhausting and never ending'

NEW YORK -- Sloane Stephens spoke out about online harassment and abuse on Saturday via her Instagram account. She said that this type of hate was so exhausting and never ends.
Stephens lost three sets to Angelique Kerber after she took the first set. She shared her Instagram stories, where angry strangers left more than 2000 abusive messages to her Instagram account, because they were upset by yesterday's results.

Stephens shared examples of messages she had received and wrote "It's so difficult to read messages such as these."

The comments ranged from cruel curse words to abuse her for posting photos of herself. One message threatened her with physical harm, and suggested she be banned from playing tennis and imprisoned.

Stephens wrote, "This isn’t talked about enough. But it really freaking stinks."

The series ended on a positive note. She shared encouraging messages and expressed gratitude for having a supportive support system.

Stephens wrote, "I choose positive vibes over those that are negative." "I choose to bring you guys happiness here, but it's not always smiles or roses."
