Everton 0-4 Man City: New signings impress as City hammer Everton

Last update on. From the section Women's Football
Manchester City made a perfect start to their Women’s Super League campaign at Everton thanks to the goals of summer signings Vicky Losada, and Khadijashaw.

Losada, an ex-Barcelona player, side-footed in brilliantly before Janine Beckie fired City’s second after a driving run.

Shaw scored a third goal from close range, while Steph Houghton added the fourth with a well-taken free kick.

Goodison Park's game was the first to be broadcast on UK TV free-of-charge.

City, last season's runners up, put on a spectacular show to highlight their 2021-22 title credentials.

Their front three ran wild against the home side’s back-five defensive setup during the first-half. Losada's cool finish at the post, Beckie’s unchallenged driving run through the middle and finish, and Shaw's simple final ended the game as a contest.

Steph Houghton’s ruthless, well-executed free kick was the cherry on top as City won their 11th consecutive win over Everton.

After a summer which saw them add nine players, Willie Kirk's team has big ambitions this season to break into the top three divisions.

They came second throughout but Danielle Turner's low kick, which Karima Benameur pushed past the goal post, was the closest they got to scoring a goal.

"We are still dragging ourselves on a few things"

Willie Kirk, Everton's boss: "The game started in the first minutes. I thought we looked bright. But we never looked after the ball well enough. We also weren't brave enough to get out of our possession. We were far from that level in training and the way we play has been. This caused us many problems. It's very disappointing.

"I thought that we opened the second period really well. It was much brighter than the first, but it was already too late. I would have been very concerned if we didn’t get a response from the players at half time. We made some substitutions and changed the shape, which received a response.

Gareth Taylor, Manchester City manager: "We have made great steps but we still have a lot to do." It was a professional and efficient performance. We were put under pressure in different spells. The first half of the game was very well managed and we scored some outstanding goals.

"It's just three points. That's it. Given where we are, I thought a point today would be a good result. Everton is a strong team with great players. Even at 4-0, they put us under pressure but they never gave up. It was a pleasure to keep a clean sheet.
