England v India: Ollie Pope has makings of a 'superstar' - Vaughan

Last update on. From the section Cricket
Former captain Michael Vaughan believes Ollie Pope, England's batter, could become a star.

Pope, 23 years old, marked his return to England with 81 runs on the second day at The Oval against India.

Vaughan said that Vaughan was sporadic in Test cricket.

"This was the first time that I have seen him play and I thought, 'There is a player with sheer class in Ollie Papa'. He played brilliantly."

Pope made his Test debut in 2018 at the age 20 during the series between these teams.

He has played in and out of the side, and has moved around the middle order. He also took wicket in a Test in New Zealand in 2019.

Pope is considered the best young batter, surpassing Zak Crawley, Dan Lawrence, and Dom Sibley.

After missing the first three matches in this series, he returned to make Test 100 in South Africa in 2020. He then made his half-century in nine Tests.

Vaughan, who captained 51 of his 82 Tests, said, "I have seen Pope play some good knocks, especially that hundred in South Africa."

We have not seen enough of him in matches or behind-the scenes to suggest that he is a star in the making. But, from what I saw today, he could be.

Pope from Surrey is playing in his 20th Test. However, this will be his first match on his home ground, The Oval. He averages just below 100 in first-class cricket.

His efforts helped England score 291 runs, and India scored 43-0 in their second innings. India was 56 behind.

He told BBC Sport that he was "very gutted" when he got out. "I worked hard. "I felt great and was disappointed by the shot I took to get out.

"It's bittersweet, but it's a good thing that I made a contribution."

Pope was able to make his return to the Test after Jos Buttler had missed it to be there for his second child's birth. Jonny Bairstow assumed the keeping gloves, moving down to number 6, creating a vacancy at Pope age five.

Pope stated, "Hopefully I can build upon today and it's only the beginning of a good run."

"You can see the hunger of the men at the top, and they are never satisfied with their current position.

"I will do everything I can to reach the top of my game.

The fourth Test, which lasted two days, is in delicate balance. Both sides have the opportunity to win 2-1 and the series has one more match.

England will have to chase a target during the fourth innings. Pope expects conditions to be favorable for the rest of the contest.

"We may have to work a little longer to get our wickets. He said, "Hope we can reap our rewards."

"We'll back ourself if we have a decent total to chase, because it will still a good pitch."
