‘They had him by his face’: Elderly Asian man mauled by two pit bulls in Texas

Two pit bulls attacked a 67-year old Asian man on a morning walk in Harris County, Texas.

What happened: A pair of pit bulls attacked the victim as he was walking in Queens Retreat Drive's 4300 block. He tried to run away but was unable to do so.

Surveillance video captured the attack that took place just before 6:30 AM on August 26. The attack took place in Elmer Levigne's front yard, an ex-deputy of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

A neighbor, Darrell Berryman, and another person helped the victims just minutes after the attack. Berryman was armed with a long stick, while the other person used crutches to keep the canines away.

I ran up to the pit bulls and was surprised to see them. Berryman said that the man could not move. They held him close to his face. I told my granddaughter that 911 should be called.

Levigne quickly escaped from his home with a gun in hand. He shot one of the dogs on the shoulder when they charged at him. I had to use the fire. Levigne said that the dog tried to attack us.

Minutes later, authorities, paramedics, and animal control arrived at the scene. One of the dogs bit an officer from animal control and a deputy shot it.

The aftermath: The victim sustained injuries to his neck, face, and lower body. He received two units (roughly two pints of blood) at the scene. The victim was flown to the hospital where he is still in recovery.

KPRC 2 spoke with Zach Dunlap, Cypress Creek EMS critical care manager, about the horrific dog maulings and bites he suffered. Everything had to be perfect because of the blood loss.

According to reports, the pit bulls are still alive. They are currently being held in animal control custody for a 10-day quarantine. After that, their fates will be determined.

On the other hand, the dog owner was taken into question. KTRK was able to question the dog owner. He stated that he kept his dogs in an enclosure but that a friend might have accidentally left it open. This would have allowed them to escape.

FOX 26 reports that the owner could face two third-degree felonies as a result. FOX 26 reports that one charge is for an elderly Asian victim and the other for the animal control officer who was also bit.

The case will be received by the Harris County District Attorneys Office soon. The charges can lead to jail time if they are not dropped.
