According to sources, the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to trade forward Juancho Hernandez to the Boston Celtics for Kris Dunn and guards Carsen Edwards. Also, there was a swap of 2026 Second-round picks.
The deal can't be finalized until September 15th, when Dunn will be able to be traded with other players. Dunn was previously traded to Boston last month in a separate agreement.
The Grizzlies acquired Hernangomez last week from Minnesota Timberwolves along with guard Jarrett Culver for Patrick Beverley. Hernangomez was a Minnesota Timberwolves player last season and averaged 7.2 points per game. This is his first year as a full-time Timberwolves player after signing a $21 million, three-year contract.
Minnesota had dealt for Hernangomez in the previous season as part of multi-team deals that saw Robert Covington move to the Houston Rockets and Clint Capela go to the Atlanta Hawks. Hernangomez (25), injured his left shoulder in June and was unable to participate in the Tokyo Olympics with the Spanish national team.
Hernangomez, a 35% career 3-point shooter, will provide the Celtics with some depth at power forward. This position was not available to them on their second unit.
Boston acquired Dunn as part of a deal with the Hawks, Sacramento Kings and Celtics last month. The Celtics sent out center Tristan Thompson to Atlanta and got Dunn and center Bruno Fernando, while the Hawks brought in guard Delon Wright from Sacramento. After signing a two year deal with the Hawks, Dunn was unable to play in almost all of last season due to ankle and knee problems.
Since being 33rd in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Purdue, Edwards has only played sparingly for Boston the past two years. He averaged 4.0 points per game in 31 games last year, with one start.
The Grizzlies made several moves this offseason to add players to their assets and they are still over the 15-man roster limit for next year. Rajon Rondo was also bought by the Grizzlies in one of these deals. Rondo signed with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier in this week.
