Lewis Hamilton breaks down in Dutch Grand Prix practice as Charles Leclerc fastest

The BBC Sport website has audio and text coverage of this year's Dutch Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc was the Ferrari one-two driver in Dutch Grand Prix Second Practice, while Lewis Hamilton was unable to complete most of the session due to an engine problem.

After Hamilton had completed one lap, Hamilton's Mercedes was stopped at the track. He was ranked 11th.

By 0.154 seconds, Leclerc beat Carlos Sainz, his teammate.

Esteban Ocon, Alpine's Alpine's third-ranked driver, was ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Mercedes' Valtteri bottas and Alpine's Fernando Alonso.

The second problem for a Mercedes-engined Mercedes car was Hamilton's seven-time champion, Sebastian Vettel from Aston Martin causing a 40-minute delay in the first session. He stopped at the pit lane exit.

Hamilton stopped Hamilton's car at the track side, so the car was not able to continue the session.

Because Verstappen was only on one lap, his true competitiveness was obscured by two red flags. One was for Hamilton, the other was when Haas driver Nikita Mazepin spun off at the chicane. Both occurred while Verstappen was flying.

After the Mazepin incident, Verstappen declared that it was "crazy". "I can't get a lap done, man."

The two incidents cost us about 15 minutes of running.

Verstappen was able to beat the time by just over 0.3 seconds on tires that had been worn beyond their limits.

Red Bull's driver was still blisteringly fast during the simulation runs that took place later in the session, when drivers are required to use full fuel loads.

Verstappen will be supported by more than 70,000 people each day of the race weekend

Verstappen was surrounded by Dutch fans who sang his praises on his return to Zandvoort to F1 for the first time in 35 years.

Verstappen stated that it was great to see them all in orange, and had a lot of fun at the grandstand and on the track. Although it's a short lap, there are many fast corners. It was a great day.

It doesn't look that representative for us in the short-run, as the tyres start to drop after just one lap. We will still work on some things that we aren't happy with in the short run.

"But we were competitive on the long." This is an important thing, but we also know that the starting position is equally important. We will take a look at the short-term to improve it.

Hamilton stated that he had lost his power and was told to stop. It's not the end. It was a wonderful day for weather. It is amazing to see all the people. It's amazing to see so many people there and it's great to see them hyped up. This is the first time that we have seen the enthusiasm of the Dutch fans.

"I only ran 20 minutes this morning with the red flag, so we are naturally on the back foot. But Valtteri looked like it was a good session and hopefully tomorrow will be better.

"The track is amazing. It's truly amazing. It brought back many fond memories. It's amazing to drive an F1 car.

"But I doubt we'll be in a position to overtake. We won't be able follow the lead because of our super-fast corners and high downforce.

Bottas was comfortably faster than Bottas on soft tyres, but direct comparisons cannot be made because it isn't known which engine modes they were in.

Ocon and Alpine looked great all day. The Frenchman was quick on both short and long runs. Alonso, Ocon's teammate, was just 0.2 seconds behind.

Pierre Gasly from Alpha Tauri, McLaren's Lando norris and Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi rounded out the top 10.

Kimi Raikkonen of Alfa was 16th fastest, while Williams driver George Russell was 20th.
