'Completely unacceptable': Retiring GOP Sen. Toomey says Trump should not lead ticket in 2024

Senator Pat Toomey urged his party to not nominate Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, as their presidential candidate in 2024. He called Trump's conduct after the 2020 election "completely unacceptable."
Trump was convicted by the Pennsylvania Republican in his impeachment trial for his role in inciting the attack on Capitol Hill by his supporters on January 6. The attack was fueled by misinformation by Trump's former president about widespread voter fraud and the election being "stolen".

Toomey suggested that his party consider other presidential candidates in 2024 when he spoke to CNBC in Italy at the Ambrosetti forum.

He stated, "I believe that the future party is to become a party of ideas and not a party about one person, and I think there will be much to learn from the next set if primaries."

"I believe that after the events of the 2020 election, I think that the president's behavior is completely unacceptable. Therefore, I don't think he should become the nominee to lead our party in 2024."
