The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan's 15-book fantasy series. The last few were written by Brandon Sanderson in 2007. After a few teases and the first images released earlier this month, we have been eagerly anticipating the trailer. What are you waiting for?! It's worth a look!
The trailer reveals the core of The Wheel of Times' sprawling story: Moiraine, a powerful sorcerer, comes across three boys (Josha Stradowski), Mat Cauthon, Barney Harris, Perrin Aybara, Marcus Rutherfort), Nynaeve AlMeara (Zo Robbins), Egwene aVere (Madeleine Madden), one of whom she suspects could be the reincarnation of Dragon, an entity that is so powerful, he could destroy the entire world.
You may have noticed a discrepancy when you first started reading the books. In the beginning, the only three male characters were considered candidates for the magic-wielding Dragon Reborn. This was a kind of yin and yang to the Aes Sedais. The official synopsis suggests Nyneave or Egwene could also be candidates. It is set in an epic, sprawling world with magic that only certain women can access. Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) is a member the powerful all-female organization, the Aes Sedai. She arrives in the small village of Two Rivers. She embarks on an epic, dangerous journey that spans the globe with five young women and men, one of which is predicted to be Dragon Reborn, who will either save humanity or destroy it.
The trailer also focuses heavily on the Aes Sedai, who are virtuous protectors for the world. The Aes Sedai were seen as protectors of all things. However, the reality was that they were often apathetic, supercilious and misandric. I'm not suggesting they should be perfect angels on TV, but Jordans portrayal female characters leaves plenty of room for improvement. The show's look is difficult to grasp because the clips are so short. Although the CG is great and the colors are vibrant, some of the sets look more like studio sets than the gorgeous, on-location scenes of Game of Thrones. It is worth noting that Amazon liked The Wheel of Time so much, it has already begun filming a second series.
