After losing the French Open final earlier in the year, Tsitsipas wants to win his first Grand Slam title
US Open 2021 Venue Flushing Meadows New York Date: 30-08-12 September Coverage
During his victory against Adrian Mannarino in the second round, Stefanos Tsitsipas, world number three, was met with audible jeers by US Open fans.
The victory was 6-3,6-4,6-7 (4-7-7) 6-0. However, the Greek player hit a record-breaking 27 aces in his match.
Andy Murray, a former champion, raised the issue during round 1.
Fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium had to wait for the player once more, taking eight minutes.
His opponent was delayed and he was forced to ask for balls to keep loose. Tsitsipas returned to Flushing Meadows to be met with boos.
He performed admirably, despite the jibes. He won the last set to love and tied with Carlos Alcaraz in the third round.
The 23-year old answered a question about the long pause in play. He said that he was so soaked after the third set, and that he wanted to feel "refreshed".
Officials attempted to dry the surface using blowers and towels.
Stormy weather had previously disrupted play between South African Kevin Anderson and Diego Schwartzman, the 11th seed in Argentina.
Rainwater managed to get onto the court despite Louis Armstrong Stadium's roof being closed. Fans had to use umbrellas to protect themselves.
After play resumed on the Ashe court, Schwartzman won 7-6 (7-4 6-3 6-4).
In the third round, he will be facing Alex Molcan from Slovakia.
In his victory over Dominik Koepfer, Daniil Medvedev scored 17 break points
Daniil Medvedev, the world number 2 player, won the third round by a comfortable 6-4 6-1 and 6-2 win over Dominik Koopfer earlier in the day.
The German broke Medvedev once in the first set, but Medvedev immediately responded and led the entire match.
In a dominant performance under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof, the Russian second seed had eight aces and won 88% of his points.
In the third round, he will face Spaniard Pablo Andujar.
Andrey Rublev, the fifth seed from Russia, beat Pedro Martinez 7-6 (7-2 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 6-1 to set up a third round meeting with Frances Tiafoe.
Tiafoe, 23, won 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 against Guido Pella of Argentina. This was in front of a large home crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium. It also set up a first senior meeting between Rublev and Tiafoe.
Canadian 12th seed Felix Auger - Aliassime won with a 7-6 (7-5 6-3 6-2 victory over Bernabe Zapata miralles of Spain.
Alcaraz, a Spanish teenager, proved once again why he is one the sport's most talked about young stars when he beat Arthur Rinderknech from France in four sets.
Carlos Alcaraz, who is ranked 55th globally, defeated Cameron Norrie from Britain in the first round
Alcaraz (18 years old) is the youngest man to reach third round in Grand Slams after 20-time major champion Novak Djokovic 2005.
It was a surprise when eighth seed Casper Ruud lost to Dutch world number 117 Botic Van de Zandschulp. The Dutch player beat Casper 3-6,6-4,6-3,6-4 to reach the third round in a Grand Slam.
In the meantime, Grigor Dimitrov (15th Bulgarian seed) retired after trailing by two sets of play and a double-break against Alexei Popyrin (Australian).
Popyrin will face Dan Evans in round three after Popyrin beat American Marcos Giron, 6-4 7-6 (7-6), 2-6 6-3.
