Elon Musk says the Tesla Roadster ‘should ship’ in 2023

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, stated that the Tesla Roadster would ship in 2023 in a Twitter message on Wednesday. The long time frame was due to ongoing supply chain shortages. 2021 was a year of crazy supply chain shortages. It wouldn't matter if there were 17 new products as none would ship, Musk stated.

Elon Musk announced the second-generation Roadster, which costs $200,000 at a flashy event in November 2017. He claimed that the base model can go from 0-60 in just 1.9 seconds. The Roadster will be powered by a 200kWh battery pack, and have a range of 620 miles per charge.

Production was originally scheduled to begin sometime in 2020. However, Musk announced in January that production would start in 2022. People who have already made deposits on Tesla's car will be disappointed to hear that Tesla is accepting $50,000 deposits for its base model and $250,000 for the Founders Series model.

Musk stated in an earnings call that Tesla had already responded to the shortage of chips worldwide by replacing them with other chips and rewriting its software in order to make it work, in July. However, there are still many hurdles that need to be cleared before the company can unveil its new Roadster. It's not just the Roadster, production of the Tesla Cybertruck was delayed to 2022.
