Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo breaks men's all-time international scoring record

Portugal's Cristiano Rojo has scored 110 international goals to surpass Ali Daei, Iran's greatest international goal scorer.

In the 89th minute of Portugal's World Cup qualifier against Republic of Ireland, the Manchester United player who had just been minted broke the record. Goncalo Guedes made a cross from the right side, and Ronaldo rose to receive the service and bring home the record-breaking equalizer.

In the sixth minute of stoppage, he scored his 111th international goal to lead his side to a 2-1 win.

Ronaldo declared after the match, "This record is mine and is unique." It's another milestone in my career and I'm very happy about it. It's all about motivation and the desire to keep playing football. This includes my last contract, which was a great experience, and in which I was glad to be back home. It is vital that we wake up each day with the determination to do better, to motivate others, and to make our fans and children happy.

Ronaldo, who was equal to Daei's score of 109 this year at Euro 2020, scored two goals in group-stage action against France. Both goals in Budapest's 2-2 draw came from the penalty spot.

Christine Sinclair of Canada holds the all-time record for international scoring with 186 goals.

Ronaldo made Euro history with his two goals against Hungary in Portugal's first group-stage match. He became the tournament's leading scorer with 11 goals.

He was the second man to be present at five Euros, after Carolina Morace from Italy who appeared at six tournaments.

Ronaldo is the only man who has scored in five Euros, expanding his record.

Ronaldo's record places him eighth on all-time scorers, behind Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm.

The 36-year-old made international debut in 2003. His 180 caps bring him up to par with Sergio Ramos, the Paris Saint-Germain defender, as the European man who has played the most for his country.

Ronaldo holds two significant honours for Portugal. He led his country to success at Euro 2016 as well as the inaugural UEFA Nations League three year later.
