A spokesperson for the Select Committee stated that they are investigating the attack on Capitol and trying to overturn last year's election results. We have asked companies to not destroy records that could help answer questions for Americans. We won't let those who try to cover up or hide the events of January 6th or hinder our investigation deter the committee from continuing its efforts.
The substance of McCarthy's complaint states that congressional committees routinely use subpoena power in order to obtain data from private businesses, including emails and phone records. Although the Jan. 6 committee did not identify the source of its communications, it made it clear that Congressmen are possible targets. This would be a departure form past practices that panel members have stated they believe is appropriate in this case.
Investigators from Democratic-led committees are trying to get a better picture of communications between Trump and Congressmen during the attack. McCarthy is one of the Republicans that was known to have spoken with Trump Jan. 6.
Republicans already condemned the Democrats' authoritarian overreach in investigating phone records. Two anti-Trump Republican legislators, Reps. Liz Cheney from Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, are on the panel. However, the majority of the party voted against its creation and GOP senators filibustered legislation that would have established an independent commission to investigate the Capitol rebellion.
McCarthy stated Tuesday that if these companies do not comply with the Democrat's order to hand over private information, they will be in violation of federal laws and could lose their right to operate in the United States. A Republican majority will not forget that companies can still violate federal law and will stand alongside Americans to hold them accountable.
Schiff stated Tuesday that McCarthy's threat was false.
Hes scared. Schiff stated on MSNBC that his boss is afraid. They did not want the commission or this select committee to move forward. They didn't want it to be passed as it was on a bipartisan basis and they don't want the country to find out what they were involved with.
Trump can do what he wants with Kevin McCarthy. He is trying to undermine these companies and it proves yet again why Kevin McCarthy should not be allowed to leave the speakers' office.
