Urban Meyer, the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach, said Tuesday to reporters that COVID-19 status was considered by the team when it reduced its 53-man roster.

Meyer stated that everyone was considered, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "That was part [of the considerations], such as production, let's talk about this and also whether he was vaccinated. That was a decision-maker, can I say? It was definitely in consideration."

DiRocco pointed out that there are stark differences in the return protocols of vaccinated and unvaccinated players. The latter are at greater risk of being out longer.

Unvaccinated players that test positive for PCR will be absent for at least 10 days. They will then have to undergo a three-day return–to-play protocol. If they have received two negative PCR results within 24 hours, vaccinated players can return to play before the 10-day deadline.

Meyer stated that the team educated players about the vaccine and encouraged them all to get it. However, they also offered the option for players to choose to not receive it.

Meyer spoke with the media Tuesday as Jacksonville announced its 53-man roster. Meyer, 57 years old, is currently in his first year as an NFL head coach. He was a college coach for 17 seasons, including three national championships.

The Jaguars will open their season at the Houston Texans on Sept. 12.
