TEMPE (Ariz.) -- Cardinals cornerback Malcolm Butler was placed on the reserve/retired roster Tuesday afternoon. This came a day after a report that said he was in a personal crisis and was considering retiring.
Butler was not at the Cardinals' practice Tuesday morning, and Kliff Kingsbury, head coach, did not want to discuss Butler's situation at his post-practice press conference. He said that the situation with Butler was still being determined and reiterated that it was not an official statement as of this morning.
Kingsbury stated, "I don’t want to get in, kind of, what it’s at." "Like I said before, nothing is official. Let it be.
After being released by the Tennessee Titans, Butler signed a one year contract with the Cardinals. He was brought to Arizona as a replacement for Patrick Peterson, the Cardinals' best cornerback. Arizona could now start Marco Wilson as a rookie, or move third-year corner Byron Murphy Jr. out of the slot.
Kingsbury stated that Wilson, a former Florida star could be drafted into the team for Week 1. Kingsbury stated, "It's a great position and we are happy with it."
Two-time Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots. Butler made his debut when he intercepted a Russell Wilson pass and secured a win for the Patriots over the Seattle Seahawks.
Butler, 31, was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2015. He was also named second-team All Pro in 2016. After signing a six-year contract worth $61.25million in 2018, he spent three seasons with Titans. He has 17 interceptions during his career, including four of the best in his career.
