Hossain Rasouli, an Afghanistan refugee, finally had the chance to compete in the Tokyo Paralympics. His opponents couldn't help but smile as he lined up beside them.
Rasouli was among two Afghan athletes who were evacuated last week as part of a "major global operations".
They were among the thousands who couldn't leave Afghanistan after the Taliban took power.
The 26-year old finished last in T47's long jump final.
He arrived in Tokyo late Sunday night, and was unable to compete in the 100m event.
American Roderick Townsend won long jump silver. He didn't realize Rasouli was competing until he saw 13 names instead of 12.
"I saw his name there. Townsend said that despite everything happening right now, he could not help but feel joy for him.
"We get so involved in our personal lives that we forget to notice the silver medal, but [yet] there is somebody who has made it possible to do what we all love.
"This says so much about the Paralympic Games' true meaning and its values."
After a mine blast, Rasouli lost his left hand.
His compatriot Zakia Khudadadi (23), will be the first Afghan woman to compete at the Paralympics. She will compete in the K44 taekwondo women's category -49kg.
