Israel recorded the highest daily coronavirus cases, with almost 11,000 new infections. This was due to an increase in transmission of the Delta variant. Schools are preparing for reopening.
The previous record was set on 18 January with 10,118 cases.
Israel, despite Tuesday's confirmed 10,947 cases, is pushing ahead with plans for Wednesday's full opening of its schools as part of its efforts to increase vaccination rates.
Naftali Bennett, the prime minister, was critical of the lockdowns imposed by his predecessor. Benjamin Netanyahu maintained that vaccinations and protective measures like masks can control the surge.
His government encouraged residents over 12 to receive a third shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccination.
Around 60% of Israel's 9.3 Million residents have had two doses of the vaccine. This includes 80% of adults.
Israel was the first country to start a national vaccination campaign in December. It reduced the number of daily infections to a small amount, and in June almost all restrictions on pandemics were lifted.
Since then, several measures have been reinstated, including indoor masking, restrictions on gatherings and the requirement to show proof of vaccination to gain entry to certain facilities.
Bennett stated that the launch of the booster jab program was producing results, including a decrease in hospitalisations.
