Samsung’s new Z Flip and Z Fold get battery-protection feature

SamMobile reports that the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 have been granted battery protection previously only available to Samsung tablets. This protects batteries to prolong their life span. Protect battery limits the device's charge level to 85 percent. This prevents the full charge from exceeding 100 percent which can lead to the batteries being worn down over many years.
This feature is found in the Settings app under Device care > Battery > More battery settings. However, it comes with the obvious drawback of limiting how much battery life each phone can get per charge. We found that the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 have around one day of battery life, so you may need to charge up to 85 percent to get the full range.

This might be worth the cost if you want to get the most out of your flagship phone, especially when you consider the difficulties of fixing them.

SamMobile points out that Samsung's Protect battery feature is not new to its phones. It is however the first time it has appeared on a company's phone. This feature is available in One UI 3.1.1 for the two foldables. However, it has not yet been made available on other smartphones that have the same update.

Similar battery protection features are available from other smartphone manufacturers. Samsung's battery protection feature will not allow a device to charge above 85 percent. However, Apples and OnePlus have similar features that temporarily limit their charging to 80 percent. Then, they aim to recharge their batteries to 100 per cent just before unplugging to reduce the amount of time that they are fully charged.
