On Sunday, August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida struck Louisiana as a Category-4 storm. It was the first hurricane to strike the Gulf Coast and first to reach the U.S. mainland.
After it struck near Port Fourchon, the storm knocked out power supply to approximately 1 million people in southeastern Louisiana. The storm struck coincidentally on the 16th anniversary Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans, Louisiana, when it struck near Port Fourchon.
Astronauts and weather satellites orbited in orbit watched Hurricane Ida approach, then hit, southeastern Louisiana. Click on the arrows to view their amazing photos taken from space.
This is a complete view of Hurricane Ida, as it appeared Aug. 28, 2021. It was still a Category 2 hurricane. This view was captured by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
