Steve Sarkisian, Texas's coach, announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card will be the Longhorns' season opener against No. 23 Louisiana, Casey Thompson will play in the game.
Sarkisian said that he would reevaluate the competition to Texas' permanent starting position after Week 1.
Sarkisian stated Monday that neither of the men has ever played in a game during their careers. We'll review it after one week. "But the best part for those guys is that I think we are improving as an offense."
Sarkisian declined the request to confirm if Card had been hired permanently.
Sarkisian stated that "he'll start against Louisiana." "Casey is gonna play. What time and how much? I don't know. There has to be some feel to the game. Hudson has earned the right as the starter, but Casey will be able to get his chances somewhere in the game.
Card, a 6-foot-2 and 200-pound Austinian from Lake Travis High School was No. 40 in 2020 ESPN300. Thompson was defeated by him, a junior who performed a four-touchdown miracle off the bench to replace injured Sam Ehlinger during last season's Alamo Bowl victory over Colorado.
In two Texas appearances, Card attempted only three passes.
Sarkisian expressed initial displeasure at the mistakes of both quarterbacks in the Longhorns first scrimmage. Sarkisian expressed satisfaction with their progress after the Aug. 21 second scrimmage.
Sarkisian stated that Hudson is a talented young man. He has a great work ethic and he really tries his best to do things the way we want. It's not Casey's fault, as I explained to Casey. After that first scrimmage, both men performed very well. It was hard call.
Saturday's home opener for the 21st-ranked Longhorns is against the Ragin’ Cajuns. This will be their first match against a ranked opponent since 1984 when they defeated the No. 4 Texas defeated No. 11 Auburn wins 35-27
