Apple buys classical music service, Primephonic – TechCrunch

Apple announced today that Primephonic has been acquired by it to increase its classical music offerings. This Amsterdam-based streaming service, which was launched in 2014, will put a strong focus on music genres that have been severely lacking in Apple Music's generalized approach.
As the service is absorbed into Apple Music, it will be effectively discontinued as a standalone product. Primephonic will cease to exist on September 7th, as Apple prepares for the launch of its classical music app in 2022.

Primephonic is loved by artists for its classical music, and now we can join forces with Apple to bring the best experience to millions of listeners. Primephonic CEO Thomas Steffens, Primephonic cofounder, stated in an Apple release. We can bring classical music into the mainstream and connect new generations of musicians to the next generation.

Primephonics CTO interviewed the company last year and stated that the service was launched in 150 countries. It appears to be a more mature streaming service than other generalized ones.

Mixpanel's 2020 report stated that most of our users are over 55 and have high educations. In the office, we joke that we don't know if classical music is what makes you wealthy or not.

Apple Music Classical users will enjoy a special experience with Primephonic that includes enhanced browsing and search capabilities by composer or by repertoire, detailed displays and metadata for classical music, and other new benefits.

The company will offer six months of Apple Music for free to Primephonic customers while the new classical service is being developed.
