Labor Day Travel Expectations Are On Par With 2019 and 2020 Levels

The summer travel season 2021 is ending, but there's still time to travel. A Tripadvisor survey found that 31 percent of Americans plan to travel over the Labor Day weekend. This is the same as last year's holiday weekend travel (32%), and it's not too far from 2019 (35%).
According to Tripadvisor, 22 percent U.S. travellers haven't yet decided if it is going to be a trip this Labor Day. Tripadvisor found that 70 percent of U.S. travelers booked trips on Tripadvisor within the next three week. This suggests that some Americans may have made too many decisions about traveling.

With 38 percent of millennials planning to travel for the weekend, they are the most enthusiastic demographic. Boomers, at only 13 percent, are most anxious about traveling. 32% of Gen X, 31% of Gen Z plan to travel.

For the week of August 29 to September 6, 2021, Wednesday is the most popular day for check-in. Friday is September 3, 2021.

The Labor Day holiday will see 86 percent of those who travel remain in the United States. 45 percent will travel locally (near home by train/car) while 41 percent will fly within the country. One-fourth of those who travel internationally will be.

Accommodations are a priority to travelers. Tripadvisor filters like free cancellation, pay at the stay, and travel safety are some of the most popular.

National parks and beaches are top-ranked attractions.

Data shows that major cities are more popular in 2019, while outdoor and beach destinations have grown in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trend to visit large cities is still evident today, with New York City, Chicago, and other popular destinations reemerging.
