Ben Stokes: The Sun newspaper pays damages to England cricketer over front-page family tragedy story

Stokes is taking a break in cricket to take care of his mental health and rest his injured finger.

After publishing a story about a family tragedy, the Sun published a story in which it claimed that Ben Stokes, England cricketer, and his mother were sued by The Sun.

Deborah Stokes filed legal action against the September 2019 front page article. She claimed that it contained private information that was not in public interest.

Although the Sun initially supported the story, it has since apologized to the family for causing "great pain".

The Sun stated that "we should not have published it".

"We apologize to Ben and Deborah Stokes. We have agreed to compensate them for their damages and legal expenses."

The Sun stated to the BBC that it had received the cooperation of Stokes family members in 2019, adding that the events described in the story were "a matter public record" and the subject of extensive front page publicity in New Zealand at the same time.

Stokes was born in New Zealand, and moved to Cumbria when he was 12.

He described the article at the time as "utterly disgusting" or "lowest form journalism".

Deborah Stokes stated, "The decision to publish the article was a decision... to expose, and profit from exposing deeply private and painful matters in our family."

"The pain caused to our family by this article's publication is something that we cannot forgive.

"Ben and me can't take pleasure in concluding the settlement with The Sun.

"We can only hope our actions in holding the paper accountable will leave a lasting impression, and one that will help prevent other families from suffering the same pain that was inflicted upon our family by this piece."

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), announced that Stokes would "take an indefinite rest from all cricket with immediate effect" in July to prioritize his mental health and rest his injured finger.
