Edinson Cavani: Manchester United striker has international call-up cancelled by Uruguay

Edinson Cavani was the first Manchester United player to make an appearance in the 1-0 win over Wolves.

After his Uruguay call-up was cancelled, Edinson Cavani will continue to be with Manchester United during the international break.

Premier League clubs unanimously decided to not release players for World Cup qualifying matches and friendly matches against red-list countries.

Cavani was to miss United games, as Fifa extended international windows by two more days in South America.

He would have also been required to remain in quarantine for ten days upon his return to the UK.

Cavani will not be joining his country to play in three World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Bolivia, but he will remain in the UK.

In a statement, the Uruguayan Football Association stated that it had "decided not to accept the request for Edinson Cavani footballer".

Spain's La Liga requested to the Spanish football association for two games on 11 September, Villarreal Alves and Sevilla Barcelona. The request was made by Spain to postpone the game and to modify the kick-off times for the other fixtures of the matchweek.

Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham and Cristian Romero from Tottenham are planning to fly home to Argentina, a country on red list. This will mean they will miss three Spurs matches.

Argentina will be playing Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia in World Cup qualifying matches. These are four countries that are on the red list and must be isolated in a hotel government for 10 days following their return to the UK.

Nuno Espirito Sante, Tottenham's boss, has asked for assistance from football and political authorities. He said: "We cannot stop them but we try to find the best way so that when they return we are able to get them sooner."

Aston Villa has also confirmed that Emi Martinez, goalkeeper, and Emi Buendia (midfielder), will be traveling to South America for the first two qualifying matches, but will not travel to Bolivia for the third. They will be available for only one club match, against Chelsea on September 11.

Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa, confirmed last week that the organisation had written to Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, and asked for his support "in particular" so that players have the chance to represent their country in qualifying matches for Fifa World Cup.

La Liga lost a case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the release of South American World Cup qualifiers players.

Fifa opposed the league's decision to extend September and October South American windows to allow for the catch-up on qualifying that was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The league says that a postponement will allow for "mitigating the irreparable harm caused by this decision, which threatens the sporting integrity and our competition."
