In his first league match against Watford, Harry Kane seemed to be OK.
It was a strange feeling that he was sometimes angry, picking up a booking right before the break. But maybe it was a reaction to the pitch and the way the referee, Andre Marriner was handling the game.
However, he was able to work for the side, link play, and try to score his goal. This is a good enough performance for a deeper role that he can share with the runners and movement of Tottenham.
Both full-backs moved forward, Dele Alli came from deep, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was passing was a feature, and Steven Bergwijn was making runs.
Harry Kane only made seven touches in Watford's penalty area, but he covered more ground (10.15 km) than any Spurs player other than Dele Alli (10.72km).
Although they were dangerous at times, Harry was unable to get shots off because Watford was parking the bus. This is why Harry was limited to one shot late in the game.
He was still in those pockets trying to find passes to open Watford, and almost reached his goal when a toenail stopped him from tap-in.
What's next for Kane & Spurs?
Kane was fully understood by the club and many Spurs fans will still sympathize with him. He was rightfully able to move on.
They all made their moves, whether it was Robbie Keane going to Liverpool, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, and Michael Carrick heading to Manchester United, or Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, and Gareth Bale heading for Real Madrid.
Over the past five seasons, Kane has been Tottenham's most successful player. Kane is their talisman, and "one of their own", as the chant goes from on the terrace.
A normal market would have seen Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona at the table vying for Kane's signature.
Spurs wanted a high price and the market was moving in his favor, so there was only one place. I'm still surprised United didn’t take him. He looks perfect for Old Trafford.
City didn't make him their top priority. If I were Kane, this would be the end of that move. There had been discussion about Kane becoming a City player. They would do anything to get him.
After a long summer transfer saga that involved Manchester City, Kane declared his intention to stay at Spurs.
They made Jack Grealish their priority, which is their prerogative.
Kane is in for a difficult year. Modric was in a similar situation to me with Chelsea. He was desperate to leave. Modric was furious about the situation but he returned to the club and was brilliant. He ended up moving to Real Madrid.
Sometimes things happen for reasons. It will be difficult for him to understand it. As a footballer, I hope he gets the opportunity to play for one the biggest clubs in the world.
It was either the pandemic, not meeting his price, or Tottenham not being able to provide the forward he wanted, but the stars didn't align for him.
Although there have been reports about a potential new contract at Spurs he will be certain that he will not leave if he signs such a deal.
This is not a bad thing, because he could say that he has not accepted 130m for him so that I am worth at most 300,000. A good point to note is Kane's age as well as his long-term contract.
If I were Harry Kane, I would be patient, do my best, and work with the chairman to make sure that I get the move I want next season.
Daniel Levy will eventually want the money. What would Kane make if he had one year remaining on his contract? The amount Kane is performing will depend on his performance, but we are still talking about 80m.
The club will continue to try to raise the most money for him next year, but there needs to be another discussion about how to determine a transfer fee that is fair for both sides.
I can't see the chairman sitting there, rubbing his hands, saying "you only have three years and you're not going to anywhere", because I wish they had a better relationship.
After a turbulent summer, Spurs rebound
Although three wins in three games is a good start, it's still difficult to see where Tottenham stand at this point.
They won the match against Manchester City on the counter-attack, and their win at Wolves was very similar.
The thing that stands out to me has been the team spirit, togetherness and determination despite a difficult summer with uncertainty in management and the Kane situation almost making them laughable.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United will all be competing for the top spot on the table. It all depends on what Tottenham, Everton and West Ham, as well as other clubs that are looking to improve themselves, can do.
Tottenham has a strong squad, but they struggled to get off to a winning start last season.
It is impossible to predict that it will be any different this year. It will be fascinating to see how Nuno Espirito Santato keeps everyone happy, and if he can push the chairman further to challenge him.
