Garth Crooks' team of the week: De Gea, Van Dijk, Gundogan, Townsend, Torres,

Manchester United defeated Wolves 1-0 in the first match since they announced an agreement to resign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Tottenham defeated Watford by 1-0 to be the Premier League's only winning team. Leeds was held at Burnley with a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal's poor start was continued by a 5-0 loss at Manchester City. Liverpool and Chelsea were drawn 1-1 at Anfield.

With a win at Brighton of 2-0, Everton is now seven points clear. Leicester won their second win of this season at Norwich with a 2-1 win.

Brentford continued to make a positive start in the top flight with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. Newcastle was held at Southampton by a draw of 2-2. Crystal Palace twice fought back to win a similar result at West Ham.

You can check out my team of week, and make your own selections at the end of the article.

Goalkeeper: David de Gea (Man Utd)

David de Gea: Chelsea's Edouard Mendy was inserted after his performance against Liverpool with 12 minutes remaining in the match between Wolves and Manchester United.

The Senegalese goalkeeper was able to keep his cool in hostile conditions and was still in great form. He was right to be. Chelsea fought brilliantly to win a point with 10 men against Liverpool, who seemed in the mood - and Anfield crowd hungry for blood.

That was before United's De Gea saved Romain Saiss, Wolves defender, with a remarkable point-blank save. De Gea's performance was unlike anything I have seen in at least two decades.

Did you know? To help his side win 1-0, De Gea made five saves against Wolves. This was De Gea's 123rd Premier League clean-sheet, 11 more than any other Manchester United goalkeeper.

Defenders: Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

Antonio Rudiger: Reece James, Chelsea's player against Liverpool, was given a red card. But it wasn't. Thomas Tuchel, Blues manager, summed it all when he stated that his team displayed great resilience and spirit. Rudiger was the most notable example.

Since a long time, I've been saying that this player is Chelsea’s greatest defensive asset.

He was booked in the first period, and I was certain he would be given a second yellow. But Rudiger proved far more intelligent than that. The German centre-back has improved under Tuchel.

Did you know? Rudiger won possession six times against Liverpool with three tackles and three clearances.

Virgil van Dijk

The international from the Netherlands is slowly but surely returning to the boil. He is not only commanding his penalty area once again but he is also stepping forward and becoming a threat to the opposition box. Van Dijk is a rare defender.

Did you know? Did you know Van Dijk won possession against Chelsea more often than any other Liverpool player (17 times), and completed 91% of his passes.

Cesar Azpilicueta - For the second week in succession, Azpilicueta is in my lineup. His handling of raids by Andy Robertson, and the constant threat from Sadio Mene was exceptional.

Although we were entitled to believe that Chelsea had given up on James, nothing could be further from the truth. The sending off: Why is it that a player must be punished twice for a single offense?

While I don't mind the penalty being given, Azpilicueta had to challenge Azpilicueta's decision. It is a bad rule.

Did you know? Azpilicueta was the Chelsea player who made more tackles (66) and clearances (9) against Liverpool.

Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace), Paul Pogba, Ilkay Gundogan and Andros Townsend are the midfielders.

Conor Gallagher. I thought he did a great job to get his first goal past Lukasz Fabiaski. But the second was an amazing finish. Gallagher appears very comfortable in the Crystal Palace setup.

He was on loan at West Brom last season, and I witnessed him struggle in a poor team. The Chelsea player is beginning to reap the benefits of his willingness to play on loan whenever he can in order to earn valuable playing time.

Although I was starting to worry about Patrick Vieira at Palace, two goals and his first goal away against West Ham are encouraging signs.

Did you know? Gallagher is the second Premier League player to score at least 2 goals in his first two games for the Eagles. Bakary Sako was the other.

Paul Pogba - Although this was not Manchester United's best hour at Wolves they still managed to get the result thanks to De Gea and Pogba’s perseverance. This fixture's highlight was Pogba’s tackle on Ruben Nves, just before Mason Greenwood's goal.

The first was that the France international won a ball that he wasn’t entitled to. Mike Dean was able to help him win. If Neves had walked down first, rather than looking at United's referee, he would have been awarded the free-kick.

However, to take two steps after the tackle and then to fall to the ground was an act of defiance.

Did you know? Pogba made (75) attempts and completed (65) more passes than any United player. He also made three interceptions.

Ilkay Gundogan was a great player for City last season, and it looks like he will have another crucial role to play in ensuring his team retains the title and lifts the elusive Champions League.

Arsenal, on the other side, have no goals or points after three games and are at the bottom of the Premier League table for the first-time in their history. It is a sad sight to see one of the best clubs in the country fall to the ground.

Granit Xhaka was unsure what he thought he was doing when he tackled an opponent who, even though he won, was in an area that was of little consequence. This exemplifies the player's lackof thought and discipline. It is unclear where Arsenal will go from here.

Did you know? Gundogan scored 12 Premier League goals in 2021. Harry Kane (14) can beat that total.

Andros Townsend - This was a great performance by Everton at Brighton, and the football they play under Rafael Benitez is just as good as under Carlo Ancelotti.

Benitez made two brilliant signings in Demarai Grey and Townsend. Both of them were a source of pain for Brighton. But, what happened when Everton received a penalty was truly remarkable.

Richarlison was determined not to concede the penalty but he kept the ball. Townsend took the ball out of Richarlison's hands and allowed Dominic Calvert Lewin to kick the spot-kick. Is that Townsend's assist?

Did you know? Townsend was the Everton player who won more fouls against Brighton (4), and he also made four tackles.

Forwards: Gabriel Jesus (Man City), Michail Antonio (West Ham), Ferran Torres (Man City)

Gabriel Jesus: Gabriel Jesus adds another goal to his early-season goals and assists against Arsenal while trying to convince Pep guardiola that he should lead the line for Manchester City following the departure Sergio Aguero.

They can do it while playing Arsenal or Norwich. They will have a harder time scoring goals against organised teams, which will make it more difficult.

Guardiola must stop wasting the talents of real goal scorers in order to play a style that is good enough for the Premier League but not so successful in City the Champions League.

Did you know? Jesus has not lost one of the 43 Premier League matches he has played in. This is a record that only James Milner (54) or Darius Vassell (46) can beat.

Michail Antonio Antonio is having the time of his life playing football.

He was outstanding against Newcastle, great against Leicester, and even more impressive against Crystal Palace. His composure in laying on Pablo Fornals goal was admirable.

Antonio scored what can be described as a Michail Antonio goal. However, Fornals' assist required thought and the willingness to help the team. That's quite a feat.

Did you know? Antonio is the first West Ham player to reach 50 top-flight goals since Tony Cottee's 1985-86 campaign.

Ferran Torres scored two goals against Arsenal, but did it break any sweat? What were the Gunners expecting with a back trio of Sead Kolasinac and Rob Holding, as well as Calum Chambers's?

Under George Graham and Arsene wenger, this team would travel to City and prepare for battle with proper defenders like Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Lee Dixon, Ashley Cole, Lauren, and Kolo Toure. It was always clear that you were playing in a match.

We saw Manchester City's defenders fail to defend. They were led by Mikel Arteta (a manager who is becoming more and more out-of-touch). Although I have heard of One Direction, this group had no direction.

Did you know? Torres scored and assisted in top-flight league games for the second time. This was the first since scoring one goal and helping Valencia score one against Levante in December 2019.

The Crooks of the Matter

Gianni Infantino, Fifa president, has asked Boris Johnson to grant exemptions to Premier League clubs so they can release players from red-list countries for World Cup qualifying. It seems that countries are being added to this list every hour. However, the Fifa president says it is a matter of "great urgency and importance" for players to be released.

What is it like to play football?

While many destination weddings around the globe are being cancelled, and international conferences put on hold worldwide, Infantino insists that World Cup qualifiers must continue. Infantino stated, "A show of solidarity by every member association and every league and every club to do what's right and fair for global soccer."

What is best for the nation's health? The Department for Culture, Media and Sport stated that they do not want to change the current policy and allow players access to countries on red lists. This is quite correct.

Spain is also supporting the UK government's position, and I am sure other countries will do so. In a rare act of solidarity, even the Premier League voted against Infantino's request.

Fifa's commercial interests are completely captured in his final comment, which claims that the integrity of qualifiers is at risk. Fifa's 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been criticized for its attempt to hold matches in extreme temperatures and artificial conditions.

The competition cannot afford to allow the top teams, which invariably have some of the most talented players, to not qualify for the World Cup finals.

Fifa would suffer a financial disaster as half the world's football fans oppose Qatar hosting the tournament. The other half is looking for reasons to not go.
