Nuno Espirito Santo: Tottenham boss seeks government red-list travel help for World Cup qualifiers

Since joining Spurs from Atalanta at the beginning of August for 42.5m, Cristian Romero has made 3 Spurs appearances

Nuno Espirito Sante, Tottenham's boss, has asked for assistance from football and political officials regarding red-list travel during international breaks.

Premier League clubs unanimously decided not to release any players for World Cup qualifying matches or friendly matches in red-list nations.

Spurs' pair Giovani Lo Celso (Spurs) and Cristian Romero (Spurs) will travel to Argentina, a country that is on their list.

Due to UK quarantining requirements, they would be unable to attend three Tottenham games.

"We understand what it means to all the players to represent their national teams. They are proud of it, so we try to anticipate the situations," Nuno said after Tottenham's victory over Watford put Tottenham at the top of the early season table.

"We can't stop it, but we try to find the best way so they return sooner."

Argentina will be playing Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia in World Cup qualifying matches. These are four countries that are on the red list and must be held in a government hotel 10 days after their return to the UK.

Aston Villa has also confirmed that their two Argentina internationals, Emi Martinez, goalkeeper, and Emi Buendia midfielder, will travel to South America for two qualifiers. They will miss the third against Bolivia so they will only be available for one club match, against Chelsea, on September 11.

Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa, confirmed last week that the organisation had written to Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, and asked for his support "in particular" so that players have the chance to represent their country in qualifying matches for Fifa World Cup.

Nuno stated that the problem does not only affect us but all other clubs as well as all South American players participating in the Premier League. We must obey the law of the government.

"We will do our best, but we don't have any help from Fifa or the government."

Fifa extended the September and Oct international windows by 2 days in South America. This was to allow countries to catch up with World Cup qualifiers that were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the time difference, some players may not be able to return to the UK for those games until Saturday 11 September when eight Premier League matches will take place.
