Luke Skywalker's Mandalorian Cameo Was Guided by Our Star Wars Memories

You've likely seen Disney Gallery: Star Wars The Mandalorian or read our post on the coolest lessons we learned. But there is always more to be told. The Mandalorian Season 2 finale featured Mark Hamills Luke Skywalker appearance. It was not only a surprise but a huge success after a lot of hard work.

This week's Disney+ Behind-the-scenes Episode explained a lot. But Industrial Light & Magic VFX Supervisor Richard Bluff spoke with IndieWire to discuss some details. Bluff stated that the team wanted Luke to look exactly like Return of the Jedi's third Star Wars film. However, showrunner Jon Favreau, executive producer Dave Filoni, wanted Hamill to be there to assist with the performance and to use his physicality whenever possible.

They also used Max Lloyd Jones as a body-double, but Hamill is now older. To make the performances blend together, Lola Visual Effects was hired (as well as being used by Marvel Studios). Bluff stated that the company did use deepfake technology but they didn't rely on it too much because of the low resolution. After he had improved the Luke scene that Lucasfilm had worked so hard on, Lucasfilm hired a deepfake maker to work at Industrial Light and Magic.

Bluff stated that people's memories of Luke Skywalker are not in sharp 4K resolution. Bluff explained that the softness was chosen to match past imagery. It wasn't about putting the character into a new setting, but rather directing the audience towards an image they already remember.

The Disney Gallery episode of The Disney Gallery is streaming on Disney+. We are still waiting to hear when The Mandalorian season 3 will be available. We have The Book of Boba Fett and Disney Gallery: Star Wars The Book of Boba Fett.
