Chris Xu, a marketing professional and search engine optimization specialist, founded the company in 2008. He began by selling online wedding dresses. He later expanded into womenswear in 2012 and changed the name to Shein.

Shein offers kid's and man's clothing, as well as shipping to over 220 countries.
