James Ward-Prowse scored in the final seconds of injury time
James Ward-Prowse scored an incredible 96th-minute penalty shortly after Allan Saint-Maximin appeared for Newcastle to score an injury-time winner. Southampton was awarded a point in an exciting encounter at St James’ Park.
After Saint-Maximin scored in the 90th minutes, the hosts looked poised to win their first season-ending victory. He fired in from a loose ball after Alex McCarthy had denied Ryan Fraser's attempt.
However, Southampton received a spot-kick from VAR shortly after Adam Armstrong was fouled inside the box by Jamaal Lascelles. Ward-Prowse confidently scored the penalty.
Newcastle United 2-2 Southampton. Hasenhuttl praises Southampton for its'mentality and belief'
The Saints, who had dominated the game for much of it, earned this point. They missed several opportunities to lead in the first period, but Callum Wilson led Newcastle into the second half against the flow of play.
Mohamed Elyounoussi scored a hat trick in an 8-0 win over Newport County in the League Cup midweek. He also added an equaliser after his first effort was stopped by Freddie Woodman.
The drama of injury was over as Newcastle fans celebrated what appeared to be a win from Saint-Maximin, before Ward-Prowse's penalty stopped a streak of seven consecutive defeats on the road in Southampton's Premier League.
Unexpected thriller, but the wait for a victory goes on
The drama to come in the last few minutes of this match was barely visible. Southampton had dominated the game for long periods, but showed little skill in front of goal.
In a first-half that they controlled well, the Saints should have been out of sight, but Moussa Djenepo twice missed good chances to score. He lashed over from four yards, before taking one too many touches after being placed through on goal.
Newcastle did not do enough to encourage their fans that this season would not be one more season of flirting with relegation. They saw very little of the ball for the first 45 minutes and instead hoped to catch Southampton with their fast attack.
The health of Wilson and Saint Maximin will determine how they perform this season. After being out injured for the second half last season, Newcastle's form was poor. However, they once again provided some of their best moments in this match. They now account for three out of four Newcastle goals this season.
Southampton will be the more happy of the two teams, as they ended a miserable run away from home that saw them lose any points on the road for the past six months.
They both are still winless, and there is much they can do to improve their performance when the Premier League resumes after the international break.
